I returned the motorbike today and bussed off into the sunset. The bus ride home from the Skytrain station took 3 or 4x as long as the motorbike ride that I’ve already gotten used to. The lack of light rail coverage in Bangkok is made worse by the huge plots of empty or inaccessible land close to light rail lines. Much of this prime real estate is reserved for royalty, high officials and/or the oligarchy while regular people suffer LA-like commutes, or worse. I find a Tokyo-style city much more livable, with its density, its intimacy, its privacy, its possibilities of anything happening at any time. But Bangkok has a mojo and duende of its own that no amount of bonehead urban planning can ever white out.
